EPISODE SUMMARY

What If You're Chasing the Wrong Dream? The Courage to Question What You Want

What if you spent years pursuing a dream, sacrificing your time, energy, and opportunities, only to reach your destination and discover that it wasn't what you truly wanted?

We spend so much time worrying about failing to achieve our dreams that we rarely consider another possibility: succeeding at something that was never truly meaningful to us.

In this episode of the Mentium Podcast, Madiama explores a powerful question: Are you pursuing a dream that genuinely reflects who you are, or are you living according to someone else's expectations?

Our ambitions are often shaped by family, culture, education, and society. Parents want the best for their children. Communities celebrate certain professions. Society associates success with money, status, and recognition.

These influences aren't necessarily wrong. They can inspire us to achieve extraordinary things.

But there comes a point when we must distinguish between the dreams others have for us and the dreams we consciously choose for ourselves.

Achievement Is Not the Same as Alignment

You can accomplish something impressive and still feel disconnected from it.

You can earn the title, reach the financial milestone, build the business, or achieve the recognition you've always wanted—and still wonder why fulfillment feels out of reach.

That's because achievement and alignment are not the same thing.

Achievement is about accomplishing a goal.

Alignment is about ensuring that the goal reflects your identity, values, beliefs, strengths, and sense of purpose.

As Madiama reminds us:

“You can spend your entire life climbing a ladder, only to discover that it was leaning against the wrong wall.”

Three Kinds of Dreams

In this episode, we explore three ways our dreams take shape:

1. The Dream You Inherited
The ambitions shaped by family expectations, cultural influences, and the environment in which you grew up.

2. The Dream You Chose
The goals you consciously embrace after examining your values, strengths, interests, and aspirations.

3. The Dream You've Grown Into
The purpose that emerges as life experiences, responsibilities, and personal growth change your understanding of meaningful success.

An inherited dream isn't automatically wrong, and a dream that evolves isn't necessarily a failed dream.

A Personal Reflection: Whose Dream Am I Living?

Take one important goal you're currently pursuing and ask yourself:

  1. Where did this dream come from?
  2. Why does it matter to me today?
  3. If nobody knew whether I succeeded, would I still want to pursue it?
  4. Does this dream support the person I'm becoming?

These questions aren't intended to discourage ambition. They're an invitation to pursue success with greater clarity, intention, and alignment.

One Final Question

“Am I building the life I truly want, or am I becoming successful at living the life others expected of me?”

Meaningful success isn't simply about reaching a destination. It's about pursuing something that reflects who you are, what you value, and the contribution you want your life to make.

Continue learning. Continue growing. Continue becoming.
