EPISODE SUMMARY

When Your Reason Is Stronger Than the Road | Stop Asking How and Start Asking WHY

What keeps you moving when the plan changes, progress slows down, motivation disappears, and the road becomes harder than you expected?

In Man’s Search for Meaning, Viktor Frankl draws on a powerful thought from Friedrich Nietzsche: the person who has a why to live can endure almost any how.

Those words inspired a new reflection:

“He who has a WHY to win can bear almost any HOW.”

But what does it mean to “win”?

In this episode of the Mentium Podcast, Madiama explores winning not as defeating someone else, accumulating the most money, or receiving the most recognition, but as pursuing something meaningful enough to shape who you become and what you contribute.

A strong WHY doesn't remove difficulty.

It doesn't make rejection disappear, shorten the journey, eliminate financial pressure, or guarantee success.

The WHY doesn't always make the HOW easier. It makes the HOW worth enduring.

This conversation builds naturally on the previous episode, “What If the Plan Has to Change?”

Plans change.

Strategies change.

Timelines change.

Business models change.

Roads close and new ones appear.

The WHY gives us a reason to remain committed while becoming flexible about the HOW.

Go Deeper Than Your First WHY

If you want your business to succeed, ask why.

Perhaps the first answer is money.

Why does the money matter?

Perhaps it's financial freedom.

Why does financial freedom matter?

Perhaps it's security for your family.

And beneath that may be something even deeper: changing what opportunity looks like for the next generation.

Your first WHY may explain what you want. Your deeper WHY explains why it matters.

In the episode, Madiama introduces the Five Layers of WHY: choose one meaningful goal, ask why you want it, and continue asking why each answer matters until you reach the deeper meaning underneath the goal.

The episode also offers an important caution:

A strong WHY doesn't make every HOW acceptable.

Purpose should never become permission to compromise your integrity, abandon your values, destroy your health, or lose yourself while pursuing success.

Your WHY gives you endurance.

Your values give that endurance boundaries.

Memorable Reflections

“The WHY doesn't always make the HOW easier. It makes the HOW worth enduring.”

“Your first WHY may explain what you want. Your deeper WHY explains why it matters.”

“Be stubborn about the WHY and flexible about the HOW.”

“The WHY gives you permission to change the HOW without losing the mission.”

And the question to carry with you:

“Is my WHY strong enough to carry me through the HOW?”
