EPISODE SUMMARY

What If the Plan Has to Change?

Changing the Strategy Without Abandoning the Vision

What happens when the plan you carefully created is no longer the right plan?

Not because the dream was wrong. Not because you failed. You simply know more today than you knew when you started.

In this episode of the Mentium Podcast, Madiama explores a difficult but necessary part of growth and leadership: knowing when to adjust the plan without abandoning the vision.

We are often taught that commitment means sticking to the plan. Finish what you start. Don't quit. Stay focused.

There is wisdom in perseverance, but commitment and attachment are not the same thing.

Commitment says, “I am dedicated to what matters.”
Attachment says, “It has to happen the way I originally imagined it.”

A plan is created with the information available at the time. Then we begin, and reality teaches us things planning could not.

Customers respond differently than expected. Circumstances change. Financial assumptions prove inaccurate. New opportunities appear. We discover things about ourselves, the people we serve, and the problem we're trying to solve.

That doesn't necessarily make the original plan a mistake.

The plan may have gotten you far enough to learn what you couldn't have learned standing still.

The challenge is separating the vision from the strategy.

Your vision answers: Where am I trying to go?

Your strategy answers: How am I going to get there?

When the strategy isn't working, we don't always need a new dream. We may need a better route.

Three Questions Before Changing the Plan

What has changed?
What do you know now that you didn't know when the original decision was made?

What has not changed?
Does the deeper purpose still matter? Are your values and desired destination still relevant?

What needs to change because of what you now know?
The strategy? Timeline? Business model? Audience? Communication? Expectations? Your own behavior?

This episode also explores the difference between adaptation and avoidance, why ego can keep us attached to outdated decisions, the grief that can accompany changing direction, and the importance of surrounding yourself with people who believe in you while still telling you the truth.

Memorable Reflections

“Changing the route is not the same as abandoning the destination.”

“A method can fail without the mission failing.”

“You may be starting over, but you are not starting empty.”

“Honor the vision. Learn from the plan. Respond to reality.”

And above all:

“Don't confuse changing your mind with losing your way.”

Meaningful success isn't about proving that your first plan was right.

It's about becoming wise enough to recognize the next right move.
